Republic day 2016 in India is celebrated today, the 26th of January. This is India’s 67th Republic Day, the first Republic Day of India was celebrated in 1950. The chief guest on this Republic Day in 2016 will be the French President Francois Hollande.
Republic Day SignificanceRepublic Day in India is celebrated to commemorate the coming of its own constitution into force. After India won her independence and was freed from being a British colony in 1947, the first and most important task as a democratic country was to frame her constitution. 
The Constitution of India was drafted by eminent legal and political minds of India from 1948 to 1950. The new Indian constitution was sketched and approved by the Indian Constituent Assembly and came into force on the 26th of January in the year 1950.
The Constitution of India brought the power to the Indian citizens to select their own government. The oath was taken by the Dr. Rajendra Prasad as a first president of the India at Durbar Hall in the Government House.
